My Love Affair

Posted by lauranov on May 1, 2009

Yes, as my first blog I am going to confess.  It is not something you would expect from me but alas – it is true and rather strange.  OK, its downright silly but here it is.  I love my Outlook.  It took me a while to fall, well actually years because I clung to my web based email for so long.  My hotmail account was my total connection that never failed and I liked that I could get to it anywhere with no connection settings or trouble, just my password.  Now that I am working my business full time I had my eyes opened for me.  It was more like a slap in the face.  My beloved tech guy said that I had to use our business email address and outlook as much as possible.  Well I told him a would but of course I went behind his back and used my old favorite HA!  As it turns out, little by little I was aware that I was finding it useful.  My old paper calendar in the kitchen was starting to look empty and sad.  No pencil scribbles around the edges and red ink scrawled in the little squares to remind me that something was really important.  I was using the Outlook calendar and loving it. Yikes!  Now he was going to laugh in that ’I told you so” kind of way.  I even sat through a few tutorials offered through Microsoft – now that must be love because that is the last thing that I would normally do.  I am a learn as you go sort of gal.  Don’t like to take the time to sit down and really learn the new stuff.  Sound familiar to anyone?  Well here is my new philosophy on learning about software.  I am learning it as I go but with smaller tutorials thrown in for good measure and it seems to be working because I am in love with Outlook.  My beloved tech guy doesn’t yet know the depths of my affair, but I will have to confess soon.  He will see how I have customized things, set up my appointments (and his too), and used my cute little electronic sticky notes.  My contact list keeps growing and I am keeping them all organized in an attempt to utilize them to send out an e-newsletter, reminders, and set appointments.  It is all so cool.  Flat out – I love it.  Any hoo, what does this all have to do with you? I want to take you with me.  Maybe we can learn things together with this blog.  Maybe some of my ideas or tips will float around in cyberspace and help one person to use their software more effectively when they thought they couldn’t.  Maybe on the other hand it will only be for my own personal edification…whatever…I am still going to try.   So today is my Outlook rant and I am sure I will do alot more on it in the future as well as the rest of the Office Suite that I use a lot.   So drum roll please.><:::>…..

Outlook tips for today:       THESE ARE SO COOL

Change the time scale
By default, the calendar grid shows a time interval of 30 minutes. You can increase or decrease this interval.

1. In Calendar, right-click a blank area in the calendar grid.
2. Click Other Settings.
3. Under Day, in the Time scale list, click the grid interval that you want to show in the calendar.

Change the background color
1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click Calendar Options.
2. Under Calendar options, in the Background color list, click the color that you want.
NOTES
The color that you choose is applied to the Day and Work Week views. The Week and Month views use system background colors, which are gray and white, by default.
The color that you choose is applied to weekday hours. A darker shade of the background color is applied to night and weekend hours.

Change the font
1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Other tab.
2. Click Advanced Options.
3. Under Appearance Options, click Font.
4. Select the font and any other options that you want.

Add or remove a second time zone
You can display a second time zone in your calendar by selecting the Show an additional time zone check box in the Time Zone dialog box. The second time zone is used only to show a second time bar in Calendar view, and does not affect the way in which calendar items are stored or displayed.
NOTE The additional time zone is not affected by the current time zone settings; it is completely separate.
1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
2. Click Calendar Options.
3. Click Time Zone.
4. Do one of the following:
 Add a second time zone
1. Select the Show an additional time zone check box.
2. In the Label box, type a name for the second time zone.
3. In the Time zone box, click the time zone that you want to add.
4. If you want your computer clock to automatically adjust for daylight saving time changes, select the Adjust for daylight saving time check box.
This option is available only in time zones that use daylight saving time (DST).
 Remove a second time zone
 Clear the Show an additional time zone check box.
